Commitment

"The eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him." 2 Chronicles 16:9

Over the past few weeks, I have been building on the theme of what it takes to cultivate a culture that truly lasts, starting with Integrity, the foundation of who a leader must be, then Humility, the posture from which a great leader leads. This week I want to add a third essential ingredient: Commitment. Because you can have integrity and humility and still fall short of your full God-given potential if you are not willing to go all in and stay there over the long haul. Culture is ultimately built not by what we say we value but by what we consistently commit to day after day, season after season, through the good times and the hard ones.

We live in a culture that increasingly resists commitment. Instant gratification, endless options, and the pursuit of personal comfort have made staying the course feel countercultural. But the best things in life, the best marriages, the best businesses, the deepest friendships, and the most fruitful walks with God, are mostly born out of commitment. Especially commitment that endures over time.

I committed my life fully to Christ 25 years ago, and my life has never been the same. I have had many ups and downs along the way, and there have been seasons when I have grown weary. But I have never regretted staying committed to my walk with Jesus. I have never heard anyone say they regret staying committed to Christ. I have heard many people say they deeply regret the seasons when they drifted from that commitment. Commitment to God is always worth it.

Three Dimensions of a Fully Committed Life

  • Commitment to God — The Foundation of Everything: Our commitment to Christ is the most important commitment we will ever make. It is the one that makes every other commitment sustainable. God modeled the ultimate commitment to us first: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. That kind of radical sacrificial love compels a response. And the response He is looking for is not casual affiliation. It is a wholehearted daily devotion that says I am fully in for the long haul. For me, that commitment is expressed primarily through making my relationship with Jesus the priority of every day, giving Him the first fruits of my time through abiding in His word, prayer, and worship before the demands of leadership and life crowd in. Some days I do this better than others. But the commitment to keep coming back to that posture is what sustains everything else. When God is truly first in our lives, He has access to every other area, and that is where the transformation happens. "Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act" Psalm 37:4-5.

  • Commitment to Others — The Expression of Our Character: A fully committed life starts in relationship with Jesus and extends out from there; it is deeply relational. Our commitment to the people God has placed in our lives is one of the most powerful expressions of our character and one of the most significant ways we build cultures that last. Committed leaders build committed teams. Committed spouses build committed marriages. Committed parents build committed children. The greatest example of this in my own life is my marriage to Amy. We have been married nearly 36 years, and I can honestly say that commitment has carried us through seasons that feelings and convenience never could have. The same is true in business. The leaders and teammates who have had the greatest impact on our culture at Founders are the ones who stayed committed through the hard seasons, who chose the team over themselves when it was costly to do so. Commitment to others also means holding people to a high standard with consistency and love. It means showing up when it is inconvenient. It means speaking truth when it would be easier to stay quiet. That is what genuine committed relationship looks like, and it is the soil in which great cultures grow. "Be completely humble and gentle. Be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" Ephesians 4:2-3.

  • Commitment to Our God-Given Potential — The Stewardship of Our Calling: God has prepared good works in advance for each of us to walk in. But we only access that calling through commitment, the daily discipline of putting God first, investing in our growth, and stewarding our gifts, time, and resources with intentionality. Half-hearted effort produces half-hearted results. Full commitment unlocks full potential. This is not about striving in our own strength. It is about staying so connected to the vine of Christ so His power flows through our committed efforts and produces fruit that multiplies far beyond what we could ever generate on our own. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight" Proverbs 3:5-6.

Integrity tells us who to be. Humility tells us how to posture ourselves. And Commitment tells us how to sustain it all over time. Together, these three qualities form the interior foundation of a leader and a culture that truly lasts. I am still very much on this journey and grateful every day for a God who remains fully committed to me even when my own commitment wavers.

Challenge Question: In which of these three areas, your commitment to God, to the people around you, or to your God-given potential, is God calling you to move to full commitment this week?

Prayer: Father, thank You for being the ultimate example of commitment for loving us so fully that You gave Your Son for us while we were still far from You. Forgive us for the areas where our commitment has been inconsistent or lukewarm. Strengthen our hearts to go all in with You, with the people You have placed in our lives, and with the calling You have prepared for us. May our commitment bring You glory and become the foundation of everything we build. In Jesus name, Amen.

The eyes of the Lord are searching for hearts that are fully committed to Him. Be that person this week and watch what He does in you and through you. Have a great week!
